California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Eligibility & Licensure Information
Certificate of Clearance
Students must possess a valid Certificate of Clearance from the CTC to count any school-based PPSC fieldwork hours. Learn more here.
Units
Students must complete 45 semester units after earning their bachelor’s degree. This includes MSW units and the seven units obtained during this program. Students who do not meet this qualification can take additional courses through Open University.
Fieldwork/Practicum
Qualifying PPSC hours must:
- Be completed in California.
- Be collected after a Certificate of Clearance is issued.
- Be supervised by a qualified PPSC-SSW with a learning agreement in place.
- Be completed for public schools.
- Be completed within 7 years of enrolling in a PPSC program.
The total number of verified fieldwork or practicum hours obtained during an MSSW program must be at least 1,000, with a minimum of 450 hours in at least two school settings.
To be eligible for a PPSC, students must complete at least 450 hours of fieldwork in at least two different California public school settings:
- Public preschool, elementary, middle, high school, charter schools, school district, County Office of Education, or SELPA.
- Private schools and contracted agencies are not valid sites.
Note: A Certificate of Clearance must be obtained before the hours are accumulated. Hours completed before the Certificate of Clearance cannot be applied toward the PPSC hour requirements.
Licensure
Admission into programs leading to licensure and credentialing does not guarantee that students will obtain a license or credential. Licensure and credentialing requirements are set by agencies that are not controlled by or affiliated with Chico State, and requirements can change at any time. For example, licensure or credentialing requirements may include evidence of the right to work in the United States, such as a Social Security number or taxpayer identification number, or successful completion of a criminal background check.
Students are responsible for determining whether they can meet licensure or credentialing requirements. Chico State will not refund tuition, fees, or any associated costs to students who determine, subsequent to admission, that they cannot meet licensure or credentialing requirements.
