Thoughts from a Program Alum
Carolyn Diskin completed Chico State's Preliminary Administrative Services Credential (PASC) program in July 2024. After some time to reflect and to integrate her learning into her career, Carolyn shared some thoughts with us about the program and it's impact.
Is there a memory of your time in the program that particularly stands out?
Our professors, John Shepherd and Mike Gulbransen, always gave space for students to be heard. Whether that was to tell a story or ask a question or gather deeper clarity. There was always a human first element, and both professors did their best to be understanding and available to candidates.
How has the program impacted your career path? Do feel that it's given you a competitive advantage?
This program has impacted my career by continuing to push my balcony view of our school systems and how we meet students' needs. Most importantly, it taught me how to be a transformational leader. There were many opportunities to learn about leadership, how I can engage as a leader, and how to be a connector and conduit in my role. It encouraged me to think about education through the lens of reimagining systems and leveraging assets. This program also gave me the advantage of a strong network of fellow candidates, and a meaningful way of learning through both theory and practical application. I feel it has taught me aspects of education that go beyond just being a site administrator.
If you were talking with a prospective student, what would you want them to know before making a decision about this program?
This program is designed with the working person in mind. There is a kinship and connection offered in a cohort model, with many opportunities to talk in small groups. The professors of the program truly care and see each student as a person, and therefore make adaptations to meet our needs. One of the more important mindsets to embrace in this pursuit is that there is a lot of learning, and it's ok to not know it all. Each candidate is in a unique place in their career, and we can all come together in the interest of learning and serving students.
