Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) in School Social Work

Schedule

Participants will complete the program during the summer, June through August. Course dates are TBA.

Course: SWRK 670: Social Work and Education Policy (3 units)

Course Dates: (TBA)

This course focuses on macro-level social work practice in K-12 school settings, including preschools and programs organized primarily for adults. This course provides a legal and ethical framework for the school social worker and utilizes a systems perspective to explore federal, state, and local policies and regulations, as well as the processes and programs that have developed as a result. Topics include student rights (i.e., privacy, foster youth, unhoused youth), school discipline and due process, reporting law, and attendance. Trends in education and state and federal funding (ADA, LCAP, ESSER), which impact service delivery and education equity, are explored. The school social worker's role in organizational change and leadership, advocacy, and data-based decision-making is emphasized.

Course: SWRK 672: Social Work in Educational Settings (3 units)

Course Dates: (TBA)

This course focuses on micro- and mezzo-level culturally responsive and trauma-informed social work practice in K-12 school settings, including preschools and programs organized primarily for adults. Confidentiality, mandated reporting, crisis intervention, behavior management, and bullying and violence prevention are among the topics explored. Students gain exposure to skills in meeting needs within a larger context through collaboration with all involved stakeholders. Special attention is paid to evidence-based and promising practices in the areas of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), alternatives to exclusionary practices, equity and whole-child design, and advocacy. Focus is placed on utilizing a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment of student and system using an ecological perspective to identify factors that may affect a student's learning (educational success) in order to coordinate pertinent resources and interface with outside systems that impact student academic experiences.

Course: SWRK 599: Fieldwork Practicum (1 unit)
