The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at CSU, Chico is partnering with the Butte County Library in an engaging summer speaker series called “Because You Asked!” This unique educational program is made possible by a generous grant from the California State Library and will showcase local subject experts at five library branches each month from June to August.

OLLI LogoThe Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), celebrating 25 years at CSU, Chico is now taking reservations for its first Summer Lecture Series featuring community experts in art, psychology, theology, financial health, and communication. Attendees can sign up for individual lectures or series of topics.

There are five topics scheduled during the months of June and August:

But that’s exactly what he’ll do on Wednesday, October 10, when he introduces Dr. Kate McCarthy, tenured professor of Comparative Religion and Humanities at CSU, Chico and keynote speaker for OLLI’s Fall Program.

CHICOmary brashearsMary Brashears is preparing for her fifth semester teaching “Writing Your Slice of Life” for other seniors who will be taking her class just because they want to. She will be teaching “Writing your Slice of Life — Creating Your Own Memoir” for Chico State University’s learning-in-retirement program.

Brashears is teaching something that interests her. She is one of many retired people who are peer leaders for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, a program at Chico State University based on learning for learning’s sake. Those who participate explore new topics, discuss current events, and meet other retired people of a similar mindset.

CSU, Chico Awarded $1 Million Endowment For Osher Reentry Scholarship Program


CHICO, CA  The Bernard Osher Foundation has awarded a $1 million endowment to CSU, Chico Regional & Continuing Education to provide scholarships for reentry students whose studies were interrupted for at least five years by circumstances beyond their control, and who now want to resume their studies at CSU, Chico.  These students enter a wide range of degree programs in fields such as engineering, nursing, social work, and communications.

Reentry Students Invited to Apply for $50k in Osher Reentry Scholarships

This is the fourth consecutive year that the Osher Foundation has supported this scholarship program at CSU, Chico. In each of the three previous years, Regional & Continuing Education applied for, and was awarded, $50,000 in Osher Reentry Scholarship Grants. To date, $150,000 in Osher scholarship have been distributed directly to 38 CSU, Chico students. “Continuing Education successfully serves many different students in varied ways. The support of the Osher Foundation provides important funds to expand our service to reentry students who wish to complete their degree at CSU, Chico,” said Debra Barger, Dean of CSU, Chico Regional & Continuing Education.
