The Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors-International Nominates CSU, Chico for an Outstanding Institutional Achievement Award for hosting Botany Conference

The Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors-International (ACCED-I) nominated CSU, Chico for the Outstanding Institutional Achievement Award for the Botany 2006 Conference hosted on campus during the summer.

Botany 2006 was the Centennial Celebration of the Botanical Society of America and the joint annual meeting of the Botanical Society of America (BSA), the American Society of Plant Taxonomists (ASPT), the American Fern Society (AFS), and the American Bryological and Lichenological Society (ABLS).

Botany 2006 not only marked the 100th anniversary of the BSA, but the 2006 annual conference set new participation records, with an all-time high registration of 1,282 scientists from around the world. Prior to 2006, registrations for the conference averaged 800 participants.

CSU, Chico was recognized for successfully accommodating the additional registrants and more than 50 guests and scientific dignitaries involved in the 100th Anniversary celebration events.

ACCED-I also noted how well CSU, Chico accommodated the expanding schedule of concurrent and large events. Many of these events were hosted through the use of multiple outdoor venues. This solution maximized the value of CSU, Chico as a location for this conference because the heart of the campus is officially designated as an arboretum. The natural beauty of the campus created a spectacular setting for the botanists who appreciated and enjoyed the natural beauty and wide variety of plants and trees.

To facilitate the rapid change from speaker to speaker within individual sessions and to accommodate the large number of concurrent sessions, Continuing Education implemented a hosted, Web-based, file sharing service that allowed presenters to upload and archive large documents from anywhere in the world as they prepared for the conference. The presentations could be easily downloaded upon demand to provide a seamless transition from presentation to presentation, a service that was critical to maintain the fast pace of the presentation schedule.

Another innovation recognized by ACCED-I was the establishment of convenient Ride-n-Learn Shuttle service to the Sacramento International Airport. During the 90 minute bus ride, participants received information about the northern California region’s geography, botany, and history through a hosted guide.

From catering to facilities services to technology support, Botany 2006 was a collaborative effort that directly required the efforts of more than 100 CSU, Chico faculty and staff.

In addition to this award nomination, the ACCED-I recently certified CSU, Chico as a 1 Stop Conference Facility. This designation demonstrates to meeting planners that Chico is a high quality meeting location with an experienced conference director who can act as the point of contact for a successful event.
