Description:
This conference meets both the mandatory domestic violence update required for court-appointed evaluators and mediators and satisfies the one-time mandatory spousal/partner abuse training requirement for MFTs and LCSWs.

Topics include the use of different types of restraining orders in domestic violence cases, new laws relating to domestic violence, new laws regarding mediators and custody evaluators, and new social science research regarding families experiencing domestic violence, societal factors that contribute to domestic violence, cultural and same sex considerations, and community resources.

Learning objectives:

•  Understand how domestic violence intersects court and custody evaluation processes.

•  Know which California laws and rules apply in custody cases.

•  Learn about new DV laws.

•  Understand and integrate expectations of National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges in custody evaluations for families experiencing domestic violence.

•  Develop an understanding of new domestic violence research to use in your practice

•  Understand the underlying elements and societal factors that contribute to family violence.

•  Identify and assess family violence with adults and children.

•  Integrate select theories and techniques into a conceptual understanding and practical application for use when counseling victims and perpetrators of family violence including cultural and same sex considerations.

•  Know specific community resources working with family violence.

•  Identify and adhere to ethical and legal implications when working with family violence.

•  Describe California law as it pertains to mandatory reporting of abuse as well as laws that address domestic violence.

Presenters Bios:

Emberly C. Cross JD MSW, Coordinating Attorney
Cooperative Restraining Order Clinic
San Francisco CA

Emberly Cross has been the Coordinating Attorney at the Cooperative Restraining Order Clinic in San Francisco since 1996, helping domestic violence victims obtain restraining orders and child custody and support orders. She obtained her law degree and her Master's of Social Work degree from the University of Michigan. Prior to working at CROC, she was in private practice in family law in San Francisco.

Before practicing law, she was on staff at the University of Michigan's Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center in Ann Arbor, where she directed the sexual assault and dating violence crisis line and the sexual assault emergency response team on campus. She has served on the Board of Directors of W.O.M.A.N., Inc. in San Francisco, which provides a 24-hour crisis line and non-shelter based counseling to victims of domestic violence. She has volunteered with domestic violence and sexual assault crisis lines and emergency response teams in San Francisco and in Michigan .

She is currently a member of the Advisory Committee of San Francisco SafeStart, a federal initiative to reduce the incidence and impact of violence on young children ages 0-6 and a member of the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence's Public Policy and Research Committee. She has been a co-chair of the Children Witnessing Domestic Violence subcommittee of the California Alliance Against Domestic Violence's public policy committee, and a co-chair of San Francisco's Domestic Violence Consortium. She routinely conducts trainings on restraining orders and legislative updates in the Bay Area and throughout California.


Marjorie Cusick, LMFT
Psychotherapist, Chico, CA
Group Clinical Supervisor for Family and Children's Services, Contra Costa County

Marjorie Cusick is a practicing psychotherapist and Group Clinical Supervisor for Family and Children's Services, Contra Costa County . She served as therapist at A Safe Place in Oakland, Director of Clinical Services for Battered Women's Alternatives in Contra Costa County, and Group and Individual Supervisor for the YWCA in Martinez and the JFKennedy University Counseling Center in Pleasant Hill. Marjorie served on the Governor's Task Force on Domestic Violence and was a Board Member to the California Statewide Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

She regularly consults and presents on issues related to domestic violence and has appeared as an expert testifier for intimate partner abuse cases in civil, criminal, and federal cases.

Enrollment Information:

The conference is set up into two sessions, the DV Update, and the Spousal/Partner Abuse Seminar. You can choose to attend the full conference or just the DV update. Both sessions include lunch. We will also serve coffee, refreshments, and some light breakfast eats before the first session.
