programs including chronic disease control, emergency, disaster and

The California Attorney General's Safe from the Start Initiative is a comprehensive
approach to assure that children grow up in a safe, healthy environment. Recent
scientific research shows that young children exposed to violence can be severely
and permanently affected by it, even if they are not the intended victims.
These children are more likely to suffer increased depression, anxiety, post-traumatic
stress, anger, alcohol and drug abuse, and lower academic achievement.
