Drug Treatment: What Communities Need to Know about Drug Addictions

October 3, 2003

Featuring Dr. Alex Stalcup

Many people who abuse alcohol and/or other drugs have the disease of addiction, a disorder of the brain chemistry. In this workshop, the disease of addiction is described and examined using the bio-psycho-social model. Risk factors for the disease, and the effects of low intensity versus high intensity drugs, are discussed. Craving management is presented as the central concept in the outpatient treatment of addictive disease, including medication management of withdrawal symptoms, cognitive-behavioral models for relapse prevention, and the role of the community in recovery.

Learn what's new in state and local court practices, new methods of effective intervention, and the most current research related to the impact of domestic violence on children.

This update will be presented by Tamara Abrams, staff attorney with the Administrative Office of the Courts, Judicial Council of California.

Who Should Attend

Psychologists, marriage and family therapists, social workers, attorneys, law enforcement professionals, educators, counselors, mediators, child custody evaluators, behavioral health professionals, nurses, physicians, and anyone concerned about the treatment of addiction.
