Applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy in Challenging Classrooms
Dialectical
Behavior Therapy developed in the early 90s by Dr. Marsha Linehan,
is designed to treat people who struggle with borderline personality
disorder (BPD), suicidal thoughts, self-mutilation, food and drug abuse,
out-of-control emotions and associated depression, bipolar disorder,
and post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD).
Program Content
This conference is set up in two sessions, a two-day Overview
Conference on Dialectical Behavior Therapy and a half-day workshop,
Applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy in Challenging Classrooms.
► The two-day DBT Overview Conference will provide a comprehensive
overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Dr. Compton will cover
the theoretical foundations of DBT, common clinical strategies, and
practical guidelines for effective implementation of DBT with challenging
adolescents and adults.
► The half-day Challenging Classrooms workshop will provide an overview
of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) strategies applied to classroom
settings.

Continuing Education

Objectives Day One:
(1) Participants will be provided with an overview
of the theoretical foundations of DBT.
(2) Participants will have an understanding of the assumptions, modes,
and treatment targets in DBT.
(3) Participants will be provided with a review of behavior therapy principles
and behavior therapy strategies used in DBT.
Objectives Day Two:
(1) Participants will be provided with an overview of the skills training
modules taught in DBT.
(2) Participants will be exposed to validation and dialectical strategies
used in DBT.
(3) Participants will learn about DBT consultation teams, and will be
encouraged to role play using DBT principles with challenging case examples.
Applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy in Challenging
Classrooms
Description:
This half-day workshop will provide an overview of Dialectical Behavior
Therapy (DBT) strategies applied to classroom settings. This training
will be tailored to the needs of educators dealing with challenging classroom
behavior and students with emotional and behavioral problems. Participants
will be engaged in exercises to practice relevant skills and will be encouraged
to provide case examples for discussion.

| DBT Strategies to Manage Challenging Student
Behaviors |
Objectives:
(1) Participants will be able to observe and describe student behaviors
from the perspective of emotion dysregulation.
(2) Participants will be able to identify common forms of invalidation
in classroom settings and will be provided with strategies to increase
teacher use of validation.
(3) Participants will learn DBT strategies that teachers can use to help
students manage difficult emotions and will practice using challenging
student examples.

Continuing Education is an approved continuing education
provider for MCEP (Provider
CAL-123), the Board of Registered Nursing (Provider 00656), and
the Board of Behavioral Sciences Examiners (BBSE Provider PCE 799).
