Early Start at Chico State is Online!

All our of classes are online so that you can complete your Early Start requirement no matter where you live, where you’re traveling, or what your summer schedule is like. We’ve been asked lots of questions, like “What is it like taking an online class? How do I ask questions? Can I work ahead?” We reached out to faculty who are teaching Early Start classes and here’s what they have to say….

Online Math ClassesEarly Start Math at CSU, Chico

What are online classes like?

Chico State’s Early Start-Math courses are fully online one and three credit courses. This means that there are no required face to face meetings. The Intermediate Algebra course is accessed through our learning management system, Blackboard Learn. The three-unit Beginning Algebra course is accessed through Blackboard, but the homework is done using a third party product. There is a required $58 fee for the third party product.

Do I have to attend, like be “in” the course at a certain time?

No, but you will have assignments due on a daily basis, Monday through Friday, throughout the entire length of the course. Communication by your instructor will be by email through your CSU, Chico email account, so you’ll need to log in daily to see new messages and see what new assignments have appeared. Your instructor will give you some tips about participating in the course—and may have online “office hours” so you can chat with them directly during those times.

If I work quickly, can I finish the course quickly? Is it “self-paced”?

Unfortunately, no. We don’t want you racing through the course but instead spending time thinking about the math skills you encountered and their significance.  Activities and items will be released in Blackboard regularly throughout the course period. There is a final on the last day of each course and there are no make-ups. Be sure to allow time in your personal calendar to finish work on a daily basis and to take the scheduled final.

Online English ClassesEarly Start English at CSU, Chico

What are online classes like?

Chico State’s Early Start-English course is a fully online one credit course. This means that there are no required face to face meetings—all of the course is available to you through our learning management system, Blackboard Learn, or some other online platform like Wordpress.

Do I have to attend, like be “in” the course at a certain time?

No, but you should check the course at least once a day. Our course asks you to join a group of other writers (each led by a writing mentor) in order to discuss various aspects of writing in college and to share work with. So you’ll need to log in pretty regularly to see who’s communicating with you and what new assignments have appeared. Your mentor will give you some tips about participating in the course—and may have online “office hours” so you can chat with them directly during those times.

If I work quickly, can I finish the course quickly? Is it “self-paced”?

Unfortunately, no. We think your writing improves more quickly when you have the benefit of working with others: when you actively give and receive revision suggestions to each other and revise your work based on feedback from your mentor and others. So we set up the course to help you do that. We also think collaborative discussion is useful as a brainstorming strategy. So we don’t want you racing through the course but instead spending time thinking about your writing choices and communicating with others. Activities and items will be released in BBL regularly throughout the course period.
