OSHA - The Annual Mandated Training

Course Overview:

This is a refresher course that meets the requirements for annual OSHA training. This fast-paced course covers subjects that are mandated by OSHA, including bloodborne pathogen standard, injury and illness and prevention plan, workplace security, hazard communication, ergonomics, record keeping and documentation, and more. You will receive materials to help you develop, implement, train, measure, and update policies and procedures that will bring your office into compliance or give you the information to double check what you are already doing. Upon completion of this course, participants will receive three continuing education units in Category I.

Who should enroll?

All California dental licensees, dentists, RDAs, and RDHs.

 

Course Objectives:

Attendees will meet the requirements set forth by Cal-OSHA by adhering the content specifically to the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (BBP) Title 8 California Code of Regulations Section 5193 (8 CCR 5193) which requires training for all employees upon hire and annually thereafter which may potentially be exposed to bloodborne pathogens. This course will meet the requirements for most health care workers in California.

The participant will be able to complete the course with a clear and concise understanding of the regulations, processes and procedures necessary to comply with the regulations and will be able to assess their level of learning and knowledge of the course content through their workplace.

 

Course Content:

Will include: Introduction to Cal-OSHA and the BBP standard including scope and application; definitions; engineering controls and examples of such; exposure incident including reporting requirements; hand washing; signs and symptoms and modes of transmission of Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV); other potentially infectious material (OPIM); personal protective equipment, when to wear it, how to select it; regulated waste including disposal of; sharps, definition of, what to do incase of an injury caused by; sharps injury log and reporting requirements, disposal of and handling requirements for contaminated sharps; exposure control plan, what is required to be in the plan, how to make the plan, when to review the plan and who needs to see the plan; prohibited practices; cleaning and decontamination of worksite; laundry, contaminated laundry and who can clean it and how to store it; personal protective equipment, provision, usage, accessibility, repair and replacement of; gloves; masks; eye protection; face shields; respirators; post exposure incident evaluation and follow-up; biohazardous waste; labeling, where and how; training and record keeping requirements.

Note: Three (3) (continuing education units available only to dental professionals at this time, all other Health Care Workers may take the course and meet their annual training requirement, but they will not receive continuing education units)

 

Method of Instruction:

Will include lecture, handouts, quiz, discussion, videos, power point presentation and slides

 

Instructor Biography:

Jeannie Pittman is an approved trainer by the United States Department of Labor to instruct up to 30 continuing education hours in the GISO CFR 29, throughout the country. Ms. Pittman offers courses in Basic-Life Support (BLS) for healthcare professionals and first aid and CPR for the layperson. She is an instructor with the Emergency Care and Safety Institute and has taught at multiple venues throughout Northern California over the last seven years. She is also an approved continuing education provider for the Dental Board of California and has her certificate training in Incident Command Systems (ICS). She is the CEO and trainer of Sierra Office Safety.
