Bachelor's Degree RequirementsThe Bachelor of Science in Computer Science requires the completion of 128 units of coursework. Some of this coursework (55-57 units - primarily coursework for the major) is offered online through CSU, Chico, and some (71-73 units - primarily lower-division General Eduation) will need to be taken at a local 2-year or 4-year college, or via another online program. See the University Catalog for a full explanation of the graduation requirements. Students in the bachelor's degree program must earn at least 30 units from CSU, Chico to graduate with a CSU, Chico degree. Twenty-four of these units must be taken as a regularly matriculated CSU, Chico student. No more than 70 semester units may be transferred from a community or junior college; the remaining 58 units must be taken at a four-year college or university. Required Computer Science CoursesThe following courses (34-36 units) are required and are available online through CSU, Chico. Substitutions using transferred courses must be approved by the Computer Science Online Advisor.
The following technical writing course (3 units) is required, but is not available online at CSU, Chico. It must be taken elsewhere. A course in technical writing at another college may be used to satisfy this requirement, with approval of the Computer Science Online Advisor, Dr. Judy Challinger. Dr. Challinger has confirmed that successful completion of the following online course at Santa Barbara City College will meet the requirement: Santa Barbara City College, CIS 181/ENG 181, http://online.sbcc.edu/index.php?page=courses&sec=19§ion=1561
Computer Science Elective CoursesAn additional 4 courses (12 units) are also required and must be selected from the following list of courses. All of these are available online through CSU, Chico. Substitutions using transferred courses must be approved by the Computer Science Online Advisor.
Courses numbered 300 - 499 are considered upper-division courses at CSU, Chico. Bachelor's students may also take 500-level courses with the permission of their advisor. Required Mathematics and PhysicsThe B.S. in Computer Science requires the following courses, which must be completed elsewhere and transferred to CSU, Chico. Transferred courses must be approved by the Computer Science Online Advisor. Participants will need to identify the school(s) where these courses will be available. See the following link for articulation agreements between those institutions and CSU, Chico: http://www.assist.org/. Consultation with the Computer Science Online Advisor is recommended for all students.
General Education Courses18 units required as follows:
*All bachelor's candidates must demonstrate competency in understanding California state and local government. California students can take POLS 155/355, American government national, state and local, or its equivalent, to satisfy this requirement. *Out-of-state students can satisfy this requirement by taking a 3-unit course covering the U.S. Constitution and American Ideals, and passing an exam demonstrating competency in California state and local government. Contact your advisor for information about the exam or see equivalents offered by California Community Colleges via distance education at http://www.assist.org/. 15 units chosen from the following and must be completed elsewhere and transferred to CSU, Chico:
Within the Area C and Area D above you must complete at least 3 units in a course concerned primarily with the aspirations and history of ethnic subcultures within the United States. (CSU, Chico courses that meet this requirement are designated as "Ethnic Studies" or, starting in 2009, "U.S. Diversity."). Students are also required to complete at least 3 units in a course concerned primarily with cultures and societies outside the Western heritage. (CSU, Chico courses that meet this requirement are designated "Non-Western" or, starting in 2009, "Global Cultures."). See Cultural Diversity Requirement courses offered at CSU, Chico for examples of courses that fulfill these requirements. Courses may double count for both cultural diversity and GE, if selected carefully. For Area E above, choose one introductory lower-division course (3 units) from the following: Health; Child Development; Psychology; Nutrition; Human Sexuality; Aging/Dying.** Upper Division Theme CoursesEvery student at CSU, Chico - whether an on-campus student or a distance student - must complete an Upper Division Theme (9 units) by taking Chico courses. The theme is made up of three, 3-unit courses. One theme, Global Issues, is offered entirely online. These courses, unlike the Computer Science courses, are not self-paced. Enrollment takes place before the fall or spring semesters, and all course work must be completed within the semester. For example, if a student wishes to enroll in RELS 332 for the spring 2010 semester, he/she would enroll before the first day of the semester -- in this case, January 25, 2010. All coursework would need to be completed by the last day of the semester -- for spring 2010, that day is May 21, 2010. Below are the online Global Issues theme courses:
Additional ElectivesThe remaining units needed to fulfill the 128-unit requirement may be any electives. |
