General Information

What is Computer Science?

The Computing Science Accreditation Board, which has accredited the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science at CSU, Chico, defines Computer Science as follows:

"Computer Science is the body of knowledge concerned with computers and computation. It has theoretical, experimental, and design components and includes:

  1. theories for understanding computing devices, programs, and systems;
  2. experimentation for the development and testing of concepts;
  3. design methodology, algorithms, and tools for practical realization; and
  4. methods of analysis for verifying that these realizations meet requirements."

The curriculum integrates technical computer science requirements with institutional requirements and electives to prepare the student for a career in the computer field and for further study in computer science.

This program concentrates on the evaluation and application of automated systems. Areas within this program include system analysis, machine architecture, programming languages, and operating systems.

Faculty

The Chico Computer Science Program benefits from CSU, Chico's Computer Science faculty, an experienced group of scholars and professionals with a variety of specialties. The breadth of faculty expertise is evident from the many courses offered on varied topics: programming languages, operating systems, systems analysis, software engineering, computer networks, artificial intelligence, object-oriented methodologies, numerical analysis, computer graphics, database management, compiler theory, microprocessors, data communications, and distributed systems.

Career Outlook

The computer has enabled society to keep abreast of the increasing need for more and better information, opening up a wide range of jobs, such as application programmers, systems programmers, systems analysts, and others. Given the current expansion of science and technology, employment of trained computer scientists is expected to remain very high.
