The Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) is an accountability measure of institutional “value added” that can be adapted for the classroom to assess critical thinking skills. We review CLA psychometric properties, claims about its use, and classroom applications suggested at a CLA briefing hosted by the CSU Chancellor’s Office in April 2008. |

Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) in the General Education Chemistry Classroom (Chris Nichols) |

POGIL is a group work learning system pioneered for use in chemistry classes but applicable to any subject. Participants will learn about the implementation of the POGIL method in a GE chemistry course, and actively work through a “ChemActivity” to experience this system from the perspective of a student. |

Using online sites and prepared materials, each participant will explore and create an individual blog, wiki, and podcast. The processes will demonstrate how students and faculty can use these Web 2.0 tools for instruction and collaboration. (workshop is limited to the first 25 participants) |
